Here we have an amazingly rare and unusual item that has taken me right back to my childhood & the Sunday Masses I used to attend.
This is a lovely church collection or offerings bag that would be passed amongst the Congregation during a certain point in the Mass. ( The Offertory) The Parishioners would drop their coins ( offerings) into the bag and the money collected would go towards the church itself or to named appeals or charities.
The bag is made from a green cotton, with green being a highly common colour used in church, predominantly the Priests Vestments. The bag has a braided edge and a lovely turned hardwood handle.
It is in good vintage condition but there are a few expected areas of wear & tear. The issues include some stains here & there on the cotton surface. There is a cotton loop at the base of the bag which I believe would have hooked around the top of the opening for storage purposes etc. The loop is intact but the button is missing. Around the rim of the opening there is some fraying to the material, but the interior lining and the wooden handle are in good all round vintage condition.
It’s such a charming piece of history, a collectors piece, prop, display item or gift.
What a find!
