Vintage Grape Scissors

15/10/2021 By Emma Jervis

*SOLD* Here we have a truly beautiful piece of vintage flatware.

The handles of the scissors are designed with what appears to be a squirrel scurrying along a grape vine.

They are believed to be EPNS ( silver plate ) but have no obvious marking.

The idea behind these scissors originated in the early 19th Century when there was a strict dining etiquette amongst the “ polite society “. The scissors were simply used to cut the grapes off the bunch at the stems to save “pulling” at the bunch & therefore risking dirtying the hands of the eater. They were then allowed to use their fingers to continue eating the fruit.

These scissors would look fabulous when using after a successful dinner party during the cheese and grapes course.

They are in very good vintage condition and they open & close as intended. There is a little bit of tarnishing to the surface and some discolouration to the blade , but I have left the scissors with their natural vintage look.

A wonderful addition to your vintage flatware or they would make a very thoughtful gift.
