Ever wondered how people kept their food warm many, many years ago?
Well, this charming plate is an example of how they did it.
This clever piece of antique serving ware consists of a top plate & a hollow base. The warm/hot water would be poured into the internal reservoir & the tasty food would sit on the plate & keep warm during the meal.
Water would be poured through a small hole on the side, which is “plugged” by a cork stopper.
The plate has been well used over many years & through research may even be older than 100 years – imagine all the meals this plate would have been used for.
A delightful, practical , simple & clever way to keep food warm, far prettier than the more modern methods we see these days.
The plate has a pretty floral pattern in blue & white, although slightly faded over time, but still very attractive.
Because of its age there are a few areas of wear & tear – fading of the colour, a chip to the underside of the top plate, cracks to the base, rubbing to the edges. – this being said, the plate is full of character and a real delight , ready to adorn your dining table, side board, kitchen dresser or a display piece within the home or a business setting.
