“Run don’t walk’ to get your hands on this incredible Antique corkscrew.
This beautiful piece was patented in 1855 by William Lund & William Edward Hipkins with the British Patent Number 736.
The bottle opener is a two part piece consisting of a corkscrew & a single lever handle.
All parts are marked by the maker –
The corkscrew has – LUND PATENTEE & MAKER ( on one side )
57 CORNHILL & 24 FLEET ST LONDON on the other side)
The lever has – LUND PATENTEE LONDON ( on one side )
PATENTEE, 56 & 57 CORNHILL LONDON ( on the other side)
There are several variations of the hinge plates, with this particular hinge depicting that is is from the “ MILESTONE TRADEMARK “ Set. This is a rare find.
To use you would first screw the worm of the corkscrew into the cork, place the collar on the lower arm around the top of the bottle, link the hole in the corkscrew to the hook of the upper arm and then push together the two handles, which then pulls the cork out of the bottle.
Made from steel with a copperised finish, this fabulous bottle opener is in very good antique condition, considering it is well over 100 years old. It shows obvious signs of tarnishing to the finish, with the expected age related rubbing. However, the rivets that attach the hinge plates to the arms are still intact and the end of the corkscrew is still pointy & sharp.
An absolute delight, a very rare find.
Great collectors item, magnificent addition to you bar and drinks ware or a fabulous display piece for a business setting.
